The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic club is the citywide progressive gay Democratic club named after the founding president of the Gay Activists Alliance of New York. Founded in 2004, the Club's mission is to secure human rights, dignity, and freedom for all people. Their membership includes a diverse array of elected officials, entertainers, grassroots organizers, and business leaders, among other advocates for human rights.
Jim Owles President Allen Roskoff shared his thoughts on the club's endorsement of Cabán: "Tiffany Cabán exemplifies what a District Attorney should represent. She will create a workforce of attorneys who will wipe out the discriminatory aspects that currently exist and will create the badly needed progressive reforms that the people of Queens thirst for. Cabán's office will be compassionate, exert justice fairly without regard to race, immigration status or national origin, will stop prosecuting victimless crimes and will include attorneys who are representative of the diversity of Queens. We are very proud that Ms. Cabán will be the first openly LGBTQIA+ District Attorney in the history of New York City." Roskoff is well known for his exceptional leadership and advocacy, including having co-authored the nation's first gay rights bill in 1970.
"Jim Owles was a testament to the power of organizing and political action to secure basic human rights for the LGBTQIA community and other marginalized groups," Tiffany Cabán said in accepting the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club's endorsement. "It is an honor to continue this fight alongside the JimOwles Liberal Democratic Club, and I am working hard to live these values through my campaign. As a queer woman, it means so much to me to have the endorsement of a group born out of and guided by Jim Owles' amazing legacy."
Tiffany Cabán has represented over 1,000 New Yorkers as a public defender. She was born and raised in Richmond Hill, and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Crime, Law, and Justice from Penn State, and a Juris Doctorate from New York Law School. She is currently an attorney with New York County Defender Services and previously worked at the Legal Aid Society's Criminal Defense Practice. Tiffany lives in Astoria with her rescue dogs, Nat and Cole.
